Giving Back Is Family’s Heart and Soul

For Marvin and Ellie Walworth of Grand Junction, Colorado, giving back is a family value.

Originally from Michigan, the couple raised their four children in Colorado. Marvin worked as an engineer, and Ellie became a second-grade teacher. The Walworths appreciated the Catholic values and academic foundation that their children received at a local Sisters of Charity school, so the family decided to establish a creative gift to benefit St. Mary’s Medical Center, which was founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1896.

“Now we have an opportunity since our children are raised and they’ve been blessed with good futures. It’s time to give back,” Ellie says.

They established a gift that pays them income, known as a charitable gift annuity, using one of their rental properties. The process was easy and flexible, Ellie says. The gift will support patients who need care but don’t have insurance.

“It was a joy working with Marv and Ellie to create a gift vehicle that enabled them to achieve their financial goals while supporting a mission they believe in. We are truly honored by their generosity,” says Carmen Shipley, CFRE, executive director of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation.

In retirement, Marv and Ellie prioritize seeing their grandchildren as well as giving back to humanitarian aid organizations.

“We feel that giving back is at the heart and soul of what we want to do,” Ellie says.
