Putting Values into Action

Growing up in Denver, minutes from Saint Joseph Hospital, Eddie Robinson got to know the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth well. His family’s dairy business provided milk to Saint Joe’s, and a teenage Eddie made some of the deliveries himself.

Eddie, along with his brother, Dick, learned early on the value of serving their communities and giving back. The two went on to be revered business leaders, sharing a passion for community activities and charitable organizations.

A natural leader, Eddie has served on countless boards, including chairing the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Board of Directors in the 1990s. With fondness, he reflects on the many wonderful people he has met through Saint Joe’s over the years.

His passion for Saint Joe’s magnified when his wife, Susan, was a patient there. Eddie remembers her physician, Dr. Gerald Rainer, with such gratitude. Recalling not only his skills, but also his hidden compassion. Dr. Rainer went above and beyond to care for Susan, continuing to check in with her even after she returned home. So it was no surprise that, in putting together his estate plan, Eddie chose to make a legacy gift in Dr. Rainer’s name. Not only did Eddie make his own gift, many others were inspired to do the same, thus setting up an endowed chair in cardiovascular innovation, the first of its kind at Saint Joe’s.

Assessing one’s own values can often lead to their own connection to a mission. Like Eddie, when giving back, one can increase the impact of their gift and focus on what and who has been meaningful to them by making a planned legacy gift.
